Barefoot College. Puppet Making.
Bunker Roy (the founder of Barefoot) kindly arranged for us all to make a puppet today so we could bring home a iconic keepsake of the college. Guided by the esteemed puppet master Ram Niwas, we attempted to make something approximating the human head.
Newspaper is first shredded and then pounded in a mortar and pestle with water and fenugreek (the binding agent) until it reaches the consistency of clay. We started with wrapping dry newspaper around the top of a dowel to create a small sphere. The paper/water/fenugreek mixture was then packed on to (technically) create a more fully realized head shape. Eyebrows, a nose, lips(very hard), ears and hair were added.
Very fun, lot of laughs throughout and some interesting outcomes….
