October 10th to 24th, 2024

CoDA is working on a return to Rajasthan in October 2024. Information below is preliminary. Please let us know if you are interested in joining us, and we can keep you posted as trip details develop.

A feast for the senses. Rajasthan province is the colourful cultural, craft and design centre of India. Visit the royal pink City Jaipur. Meet with local designers and manufacturers to share thoughts and ideas about our profession. From there travel two hours west to the country side to work and stay with the artisans of the Barefoot College.

  • Our trip begins in Jaipur where we will spend several days exploring the pink city.
  • Learn about the rich craft traditions of Rajasthan Province.
  • Find common ground and network over a casual social evening with your Indian peers.
  • Stay on site at the Barefoot College.
  • Visit the historic Amber Fort and The Anokhi Museum.
  • Visit Pushkar, a historic pilgrimage site for Hindus and Sikhs.
  • Shop until you drop at Jaipur’s endless markets.

At the rural campus of the Barefoot College, we will work directly with the artisans of Tilonia.  Together with community members, based on the skill set of the CoDA team we will work to identify meaningful problems and opportunities for design-for-export and tourist markets. Beside the possible development of new designs for block printing and products in textiles, wood and metal, we will consider tools to ensure quality control and standardization.

For over 40 years, Barefoot College has been the world’s only college for the rural poor. Operating in over 50 countries, their “one village at a time, one woman at a time” approach to development emphasizes self-sufficiency and sustainability. Barefoot College teaches practical skills, including solar energy, beekeeping and sewing.

This trip is for any creative, design professional or craftsperson, but also those who want an immersive experience. For most of this trip you will be staying on the rural campus of the Barefoot College. Shared (2 person) accommodation is comfortable, clean but basic with shared washrooms.

On this trip we are looking for varied skills. Print pattern design skills are assets but not essential. Textile, wood and metal material knowledge may be helpful for project outcomes.

Please apply as soon as possible. Applications will close when there are no more spots left.

Special thanks to Barefoot College, our partner in India and Zanzibar. Barefoot provides the campus that we work on, translation services and a local facilitator.  Barefoot College also provides employment and support services to the community members throughout the year, thereby creating the opportunity not only to work with a dedicated group of villagers but also the opportunity for the ideas that are generated from our short time together to be implemented  after we leave.

Because we travel with small groups, and the goal of each trip is to work with a community with needs that can tangibly be met though design, we respectfully ask that you complete our application form. We try to balance the right skill set according to the project we work on. Don’t worry, you likely have the goods as our methodology relies on using an interdisciplinary team. Just sometimes, we might be looking for a particular skill.

Who can apply? Anyone with creative experience! From architecture to graphic design. From furniture making to ceramics. Does designer seem an apt description for you? Than you qualify.

What happens after I apply? We will send you confirmation of your application. Once a team is finalized we will ask you to pay a $500 CND deposit to confirm your spot and provide more information, such as payment schedule, and a detailed itinerary.

When should I apply? As soon as you can! Once our trips fill up, we will close applications for that particular trip.
